Welcome to Greece

Exciting discoveries, 200 years in the making.

Your senior living is about to get a massive infusion of small-town charm and natural wonder. A large expanse of undeveloped land and more than eight miles of shoreline along Lake Ontario, Greece is a natural habitat for many forms of wildlife. The abundance of natural land provides lots of recreational opportunities for residents. Several bike trails are located within the town, as well as trails along the New York State Erie Canal. It’s a natural paradise in the truest sense.

The town maintains 17 park areas containing 764 acres of land. Only 189 acres are currently developed, with the remaining lands to be used for passive recreation. Here you’ll find: 13 baseball diamonds, 10 soccer fields, three combination football/soccer fields, eight basketball courts, 20 tennis courts, two volleyball courts, 16 playgrounds, a skate park, two disc golf courses (one 18-hole and one nine-hole), and several nature trails. If you like the outdoors, you’re going to love Greece.

A Brief History of Greece

Originally called Northampton, the town of Greece was established by the New York State Legislature on March 22, 1822. Its name was chosen due to sympathy toward the Greeks who were then fighting for independence from Turkish rule. The Town seat was named Charlotte for the daughter of Colonel Troup – the land agent for an English estate which owned much of western New York at the time. Charlotte itself was incorporated as a village in 1869 and was part of Greece until 1916.

Today, peppered with cobblestone houses and small-town charm, Greece, New York, recently embraced its bicentennial. The event was a celebration of the 200-year history of the town, which has recently documented its past with a series of documentary-style shorts you can find at the official Greece Historical Society and Museum and the museum website. The interesting and informative videos help paint a vivid snapshot of the town’s past and bridge to the rich history of New York State.
