Get to Know Kalamazoo
Originally the home of indigenous peoples of the Hopewell tradition and the Potawatami Tribe, modern Kalamazoo began with the establishment of a fur trading outpost in the 17th century. President Lincoln once even gave a speech here. In more recent times, you’ll find parks and trails with areas for picnics, biking, strolls, hiking or horseback riding.
Take a tour the Dr. Nathan Thomas House, one of the state’s most prominent Underground Railroad sites, and the W.K Kellogg Manor House, former estate of the breakfast cereal mogul and now home to a bird sanctuary and conference center. For history buffs, there’s the Gilmore Car Museum, home to nearly 400 vehicles in historic buildings and rated one of the top five automobile museums in the U.S.
